John and Cody at the 2016 Select Staffing Golf Classic!

Cody and JohnHow would you like to be a “king for a day?” According to his mother, Cody Collins, a Little Brother in Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ventura County (BBSVC)’s mentoring program, was able to find out when he and his Big Brother were featured as special guests of BBSVC’s Select Staffing Golf Classic on Monday, May 2nd.

BBSVC welcomed Big Brother John Jacen, Little Brother Cody, and Cody’s mother Mercy to speak at the Golf Classic to share their experiences with Ventura County’s premier mentoring program in front of over 200 guests. Emphasizing how special his relationship is with his mentor, Cody said to the crowd, “I don’t just tell my friends I’m going to go do the Big Brothers Big Sisters program, I tell them that I’m going to hang out with my good friend John.”

Throughout the day, golfers and guests congratulated Cody on a great speech. On the course he was able to participate in fun games provided by The Mulligan Man, like shooting a golf ball cannon down the fairway. He was also invited back on stage throughout the evening’s dinner to pull raffle tickets, and share some jokes and high fives with the event’s celebrity host, actor Chris Rich. Cody was even selected to accept the trophy for the winning golf team with whom he had been honored to golf. “It was my first time golfing and I got an Eagle on the last hole,” Cody explained on stage to loud applause.

BBSVC’s Select Staffing Golf Classic raises the much-needed funds to support the one-to-one mentoring programs that help to change the trajectory of youth facing adversity in Ventura County in positive ways. “All of the funds generously raised at our Golf Classic event helps us to serve more than 1,500 youth annually, through our one-to-one mentoring programs like Cody’s as well as through school-site programs across the county,” says BBSVC CEO Lynne West. The Golf Classic welcomes golfers and guests throughout the day to participate in happenings on the course, followed by contests, prizes, and silent and live auctions at dinner. “The event raised almost $200,000 this year, which will help us continue to build our programs across the board.”

Cody and MercyIf Little Brother Cody felt like a king for a day, he made sure that his mother Mercy felt like a queen. “One of the golfers told him to pick out one of the auction items,” Mercy explained.  While Cody had his pick of exclusive items like Disneyland tickets or a VIP Dodgers experience, he chose a diamond pendant worth $1800 to give to Mercy as a Mother’s Day gift and presented it to her on stage. “I love this young man more than words can explain. He makes me so proud.”

The Select Staffing/Big Brothers Big Sisters Golf Classic gives golfers the best – access to one of the finest, private golf courses in the region, while helping to serve more than 1,500 at-risk children and youth in mentoring programs in our schools and community. Participants will enjoy lush, tree-lined fairways, meals, drinks, swag gear, and access to silent and live auctions featuring one-of-a kind items. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ventura County (BBSVC) depends on the proceeds of this tournament to help recruit, train, screen, and conduct background checks on volunteers to ensure child safety. Professional, unparalleled BBSVC program services also provide ongoing support for children, families and volunteers to build and sustain long-lasting mentoring relationships producing measurable results.

All Golf Package registrations included green fees, cart, locker room access, a continental breakfast, a BBQ lunch, tournament gifts and prizes, team photo, refreshment stations, and dinner.
