FAQ

A “BIG” is a carefully-screened, background-checked, volunteer adult mentor who is matched with a mentee, or “LITTLE” (ages 6 – 21).

Our Bigs come from diverse backgrounds just like our Littles. You don’t need any special or skills. You just have to want to positively impact a young person. Role models come in all shapes and sizes, and with all different experiences…and you could be a perfect fit!

Our Littles are all at-risk youth living in Ventura County: they may be living in poverty, exposed to drug and alcohol abuse in their homes or environments, living in foster or kinship care, or simply having trouble in school and having trouble making friends. Every child in our program is excited about being matched with a Big and has the consent of their parent or guardian to participate. They may be Little, but they have BIG dreams…and they need role models to encourage them to keep reaching for those dreams!

In order to apply to become a volunteer BIG with BBSVC, we require the following items, which are kept confidential within the BBBS of America network:

  • General application, with references and screening waivers.
  • Photocopy of your Driver’s License.
  • Photocopy of your Car Insurance Coverage.
  • A recent photograph of yourself.
  • $25.00 fee to cover the background check process.
The $25.00 application fee is the ONLY formal cost of the program to our BIGS!  BBSVC will routinely provide donor-supported opportunities for free activities like tickets, vouchers, VIP cards, and more. Any additional activities and meals, etc, that are arranged during your time with your Little is at your own discretion.

But the quality of time invested with your Little is more important than the amount of money you spend. BBSVC does not encourage spending a lot of money on your outings. The goal of the relationship is to help youth see the world through a different lens so you can inspire your Little to become something they never thought possible. If you are going to spend money, we encourage you to seek out low-cost activities, especially in the beginning. Play ball at a local park, play a game together, or share that pizza that you were going to have for lunch anyway…or even bring your Little along to the grocery store when you are running errands!

BBSVC requires that all BIGS be willing and able to commit to the program for a minimum of one year, and to try to meet with your Little an average of once per week, for 2-4 hours per week.

HOWEVER – we understand that everyone’s schedules are different. Some Bigs and Littles are only able to meet every other week; sometimes people go on vacation, or get tied up with a big work/school project.  The more important thing is consistency and communication, and making sure your Little knows that you are an active part of their life.

…and if the match is suddenly not able to continue for a full year, your Match Support Specialist will help you close the match in a way that is comfortable for all parties.

Once you are matched with your Little, a Match Support Specialist from the agency will be in regular contact with you to provide assistance, provide any necessary mediation, and give feedback. Any time you are unsure about what to do or how to handle a situation, you will have a Match Support Specialist there to help. They’ll help you with ideas for activities, guidance for handling possible difficult situations, and feedback on how you are making a difference.
Connect with our main office to speak with any of our staff, who can address all of your questions and concerns.  There is never any pressure by our agency to apply to become a BIG – we understand it has to be the right time to volunteer.
